This past week was spent in Eastern Kentucky. We visited the Red River Gorge area for several days of photography, and hiking. The weather as well as the color were fantastic.
While driving the back roads to our destination, we came across an old general store. This old lantern was hanging on the front porch.

There is something really eye catching when I see a red barn up against a snowy background. I felt it was very important in this image to also give some focus to the entire landscape surrounding this barn.

Another image from my trip 2 weeks ago to southern Indiana. This old Mail Pouch barn has definitely seen better days, but then again, most all of these old barns are getting in this type of condition. This image was captured with my Nikon D200 using my 18-200 F5.6 VR lens and Hoya HD Pro circular polarizer.
When I initially began shooting seriously, my main focus was on the Mail Pouch barn. I now shoot all types of barns while out and about. Feel free to browse my barn gallery at Country Roads Photo.

Last weekend, along with a few of my photographer friends we paid a visit to Madison, Indiana. This is a very historic town sitting on the banks of the Ohio River.
This small town is one of the best around for a nice walk with your camera. The downtown is wonderful with many antique shops and very historic buildings. This image is the front yard of one of the many beautifully restored old homes. You can see this image a bit larger by clicking here.

While taking a long day trip yesterday into Ohio, I stumbled across this old Mail Pouch barn. This is located on highway 42, close to Waynesville, OH.
These barns are getting harder and harder to find, so you can imagine the excitement when one of these shows up along side the road. The time of day for this shot was not my favorite, but I made do with what I had. This was shot with my circular polarizing filter attached to my Nikkor 18-200 VR lens. I also used some fill flash to bring out some color and detail in the barn. View this image larger by clicking here.

These store fronts are located in a small Indiana town called Bowling Green. It appeared that all the businesses had abandoned the buildings. All the different colors and lines make this image interesting to me. Click here for a larger view.

Rusty and Weathered
Well we are finally warming up a bit here in Indiana. As you can see above, the snow is melting away. Hopefully this will be the last of the white stuff this year! These are the types of barns that I just love to stumble upon. Extremely weathered and worn. I have posted several other new images this past month that can be seen on my website Country Roads Photo. Sorry folks, but with winter, and having a terrible cold, I have just not found the time to get out and take some good images. My thoughts are that this would be a perfect time to share a black and white image of the old grist mill located in Cades Cove, deep in the heart of the Great Smokey Mountain National Park.
I have shot this on a couple of occasions, but find this black and white to be very pleasing. I call it “Walk Inside” . We spoke about this image in our photography club last night. When asked why I chose the title, my explanation was the wooden walkway and the open door. Looking at these two points in the image, I immediately want to walk inside.
